John Bland

Son of Adam Blande and Joan Atkyns, father of Mary Bland and husband of Susan Deblare

John Bland was baptised at St Gregory’s, London on 28th September 1572 . He was a Hamburgh Merchant, of the Grocers’ Company and The Merchant Adventurers. His country residence was at Plaistow, Essex

John and Susan had 17 children all baptised at St Antholin, London:

Thomas Bland was the eldest surviving son who lived at Plaistow in Essex. In conjunction with his brother John, he was appointed Receiver General of the County of York for life by a grant of King Charles 1 dated 25th June 1640. With Crowell and The Commonwealth in power their fortunes changed.

“On 25th March 1648, Sir Henry Mildmay made a report from the Committee of Revenue, referring to Mr Thomas Bland and Mr John Bland, Receiver General of Yorkshire – and upon debate had, and consideration taken of the said report – It was resolved that the sum of £6000 was due to the Parliament from them. That sum should be charged upon and paid out of their estate. – and that the whole Office of Receiver General of Yorkshire was forfeited, as to those Gentlemen – and it was further resolved that Mr Walter Fowke should be appointed in their place”.

It would appear that Parliament soon afterwards became aware of the injustice and on 12th June 1648 it was ordered.

“That, in case of the Receipts of the County of York do not reimburse Mr Bland the monies, advanced by him for the service of ‘The Isle of Wight’ then it be charged upon the first monies arising out of any part of the Revenue – and that the Committee of the Revenue do have special order for the same accordingly”.

On 19th April 1673 he had a lease for 21 years from the Queen of various tenements and marshland in the Parish of West Ham.

He married firstly Elizabeth Whitham daughter of George Whitham, Alderman of London. They did not have any children and he secondly married, at the Charter House, Katherine Sandys, sister of Sir Richard Sandys, on 1st May 1677. Thomas died on 26th September 1678. His wife died in 1718.
