John Thorogood

Son of Nicholas Thorogood, father of Elizabeth Thorogood and husband of Margaret Smith

John was born c.1533 in Temple Cheston, Hertfordshire.

His family has a Coat of Arms and, therefore must have been well off. Arms: Azure, on a chief Argent three-mascle-buckles, their tongues free-wise, of the field. Crest: A wolf’s head Argent charged on the neck with a buckle as in the Arms.

John married Margaret Smith about 1558. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Smith of Water Newton, Northamptonshire. After John’s death Margaret married John Jackson. John and Margaret had 10 children:

Nicholas Thorogood born c.1559 of Thornburgh Hall, Northamptonshire. He married Dorothy Alley (possibly Alway) of Bedford. They had a son, Nicholas Thorogood of Nassington, Northamptonshire, who created the Thorogood Family Tree for the 1618/19 Visitation of Northamptonshire.

Thomas Thorogood born c.1561 of Walmesford, Northamptonshire, He married Bridget Kell of Buckinghamshire.

Susan Thorogood born c.1563. She married William Manisty of Woodsom, Huntingdonshire.

Joane Thorogood born c.1565. She married John Hobson of London.

John Thorogood born c. 1567 of Welbourne, Linconshire. He married  ? Earl of Lincolnshire.

Elizabeth Thorogood born c.1569. She married, firstly Edward Henson and secondly Sir Peter Proby.

William Thorogood born c.1571 and buried in St Peter, Cheapside, London.

William Thorogood born c.1573 and died unmarried at Temple Cheston.

Agnes Thorogood born c.1575. She married Lawrence Fisher of Bugden, Huntingdonshire.

Frances Thorogood born c.1579. She married Edward Winchy of Chipping Wickham, Buckinghamshire.

Margaret died in 1584.
