Son of Edward and Mary Curling, father of Henry Joseph Curling and wife of Mary Jane Dunn William was baptised in Great Mongeham, Kent on 9th December 1821. He married Mary Jane Dunn on 8th June 1844 in Deal, Kent. William was then a labourer and both of them lived in North Sandy Lane. Mary Jane, know as Jane, was baptised on 25th August 1822 in Deal, Kent and she was the daughter of Ingram Dunn and Jane Fassoms, who married on 27th July 1811 in Deal, Kent. Ingram was a labourer, born on 1st February 1784 in Eastry, Kent, the son of Joseph Dunn and Mary Abbott who married on 5h October 1776 in Northbourne, Kent. Ingram was a labourer who died in 1850. William signed the Register with his mark and Mary signed with her signature According to the 1851 Census, William and Jane were living in Upper Deal, Kent. William was aged 29, an Agricultural Labourer and Jane aged 28. Their children at home were William Thomas Curling born on 26th August 1844 in North Sandy Lane, Deal. He was aged 6 and a scholar Alfred James Curling born mid 1846 in Deal. He was aged 4 Ester Dunn Curling baptised on 30th January 1848 in Deal. She was aged 3 Frederick George Curling born early1849 in Deal. He was aged 2 Also present was William’s unmarried sister, Elizabeth , aged 27, a servant, born on Mongeham, Kent According to the 1861 Census, William and Jane lived in Upper Deal, Deal, Kent, aged 39 and 38 respectively. William was an Agricultural Labourer. The following children were at home, all born in Deal, Kent: Alfred J Curling aged 14 and an Agricultural Labourer Frederick G Curling aged 12 and an Agricultural Labourer Edward T Curling aged 9 and Scholar Charles H Curling aged 4 and a Scholar Henry J Curling aged 2 May J Curling aged 9 months William appears in the 1871 Census, living in Upper Deal Road, Deal, Kent., He was aged 49 and Mary Jane, his wife, was aged 48. Deal. The following additional children were then at home all born in Deal: Frank J Curling aged 22 and a Farm Labourer Edward J Curling aged 20 and a Bricklaying Labourer Charles Henry Curling aged 14 and a Farm Labourer Henry Joseph Curling aged 12 and a Farm Labourer May Jane Curling aged 10 and a Scholar, born mid 1860 David John Curling aged 9 and a Scholar, born late 1862 George Hercules Curling aged 6 and a Scholar, born early 1864 Susannah Curling aged 3 Julia H Curling aged 2, a granddaughter According to the 1881 Census, William, aged 58 was still living in Upper Deal Road with, Jane his wife, aged 57. William was then an Agricultural labourer. Also at home were David, aged 18, who was also an Agricultural labourer; George, aged 16 who was a Carter, Agricultural, Susannah, aged 12 and Julia, aged 12, both of whom were Scholars, although Julia is then listed as a daughter not granddaughter! Mary died on 14th February 1890 in Upper Deal, aged 67. Her son, William, was the informant.
