George was baptised in Marske Cleveland, Yorkshire on 25th December 1815.
He appears in the 1841 Census in Whitby, Yorkshire, aged 25 and an Agricultural Labourer. His wife, Jane, was 21 and their son, Thomas Ditchburn, 3 months old.
The 1851 Census has George and Jane living in 5 East Sandgate, Scarborough. George, aged 36 was then a fisherman and born in Marske Cleveland. His wife, Jane, aged 30, was born in Sherburn, Cleveland. Their children at home were:
Thomas Ditchburn aged 10. According to his birth certificate he was born at 11.00 pm at Stainsacre, Whitby on 3rd March 1841
Robert Ditchburn aged 8. He was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire on 3rd October 1842 and his name was then "Bob". He married Jane Elliott on 1st May 1868. Robert was then a mariner and his father's job was then that of a Butcher. Jane died on 9th December 1887 aged 39; her address was 100 Palmerston Street, Westoe, South Shields. Robert died on 27th March 1890, aged 47. a seaman (merchant seaman); his address was then 96 Palmerston Street.
